The Snufftown Farm Brewery, to be built on the grounds of The Oasis, is in its final stages of a long 6-year approval process. The brewing mission of Dan Doyle, his business partner and brewmaster Charlie Holmgren, and friend and craft beer expert Tony Forder will be to create a vast array of artisan ales and other concoctions incorporating farmed and foraged ingredients from The Oasis and other local farms. Using hops from their 1-1/2-acre hops field, as well as an incredible variety of berries and fruits grown on site, Charlie’s incredible brewing skills will allow us to create many unique palate-pleasing ales. On-site vegetable gardens will provide many ingredients for the pizzas from their wood-fired pizza ovens that hungry guests will be able to enjoy both indoors and in a variety of amazing outdoor settings.
Perhaps you’re curious as to how Dan and Charlie came up with the name “Snufftown Farm Brewery”?
The Oasis is located between 2 local hamlets known as Snufftown. Just south of Warwick is a small section of Vernon, NJ known as Snufftown-Stockholm. Settled in 1750, early inhabitants and vacationing visitors gathered atop a mountain where liquor was being produced and sold. At that time “snuff” was a euphemism for liquor. According to historians, “men went there to have their jugs filled, for their frolics, and to go on a drinking carouse” and they referred to this activity as “going to Snufftown”. Adjacent to The Oasis is a hamlet north of Pine Island near the town line, historically considered the Snufftown section of the village of Florida. It was named for the habit of the early twentieth century farmers who relaxed on the front porch of one of the earliest homesteads, drinking beer and chewing snuff.
